The Botanicals Behind
the Theory

These five botanicals are cold-infused whole into our carrier oils — not extracted, not powdered. The entire plant goes in so nothing is lost.

Hibiscus
Cold-Infused Botanical

Tropical regions of Africa, Asia & the Caribbean

Hibiscus

Nature's natural conditioner

Hibiscus sabdariffa is a flowering plant that has been used for centuries in African and Ayurvedic hair traditions. The petals are rich in amino acids, vitamins A and C, and natural AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids).

  • Slip & detangling — natural mucilage smooths the cuticle and reduces knots
  • Shine enhancement — closes the hair shaft for mirror-like luminosity
  • Scalp stimulation — natural AHAs gently exfoliate buildup for a healthier scalp
  • Moisture retention — amino acids bind water to the hair strand
  • Frizz control — seals the cuticle against humidity
  • Strengthens strands — Vitamin C boosts collagen-like proteins in the hair
Rose Petals
Cold-Infused Botanical

Cultivated globally — Bulgaria, Morocco, India

Rose Petals

Softness from the most beloved flower on earth

Dried rosa damascena petals are packed with natural oils, antioxidants, and vitamins that have made rose a staple of luxury beauty for thousands of years — from Cleopatra's baths to modern botanical hair care.

  • Deep softness — rose's natural oils coat each strand with silky smoothness
  • Antioxidant protection — fights free radical damage that leads to dull, brittle hair
  • Moisture seal — helps lock hydration inside the hair shaft
  • Scalp soothing — anti-inflammatory properties calm irritation and dryness
  • Natural fragrance — gives the oil its subtle, feminine floral scent
  • Elasticity boost — helps hair bend without breaking
Rosemary
Cold-Infused Botanical

Mediterranean coast — Spain, Italy, Morocco

Rosemary

The most studied herb for hair growth on earth

Rosmarinus officinalis is a woody perennial herb whose oil has been the subject of clinical hair growth studies. A 2015 study in Skinmed Journal found rosemary oil as effective as minoxidil (Rogaine) for hair regrowth — without the side effects.

  • Hair growth stimulation — increases scalp circulation to deliver more nutrients to follicles
  • DHT blocking — naturally inhibits the hormone linked to hair thinning
  • Scalp health — antimicrobial and antifungal properties combat dandruff at the root
  • Strengthens roots — improves nutrient uptake at the follicle level
  • Prevents premature graying — rich in antioxidants that protect pigment cells
  • Reduces shedding — improves follicle anchoring and reduces breakage at the root
Whole Cloves
Cold-Infused Botanical

Maluku Islands, Indonesia — the original Spice Islands

Whole Cloves

The world's most potent antimicrobial botanical

Syzygium aromaticum — cloves are the dried flower buds of a tropical tree native to Indonesia. Their active compound eugenol is one of the most powerful natural antimicrobials and antioxidants known to science.

  • Scalp circulation — eugenol creates a warming sensation that dramatically increases blood flow to follicles
  • Antimicrobial scalp protection — destroys bacteria and fungi that cause dandruff, itching, and buildup
  • Antioxidant powerhouse — one of the highest ORAC scores of any botanical on earth
  • Follicle stimulation — warming effect wakes up dormant follicles
  • Reduces hair loss — improves oxygen and nutrient delivery at the root
  • Preserves formula freshness — natural eugenol extends the shelf life of the oil
Fenugreek Seeds
Cold-Infused Botanical

India, Ethiopia, Egypt — used for 4,000+ years

Fenugreek Seeds

Ancient Ayurvedic secret for length retention

Trigonella foenum-graecum seeds are rich in protein, nicotinic acid, and lecithin — a compound that deeply coats and strengthens the hair shaft. Fenugreek has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional African hair practices for millennia.

  • Protein strengthening — fenugreek's high protein content literally rebuilds and reinforces the hair shaft
  • Length retention — coats strands to prevent breakage so growth is actually retained
  • Moisture binding — lecithin acts as a humectant, drawing water into the hair
  • Scalp conditioning — soothes dryness, irritation, and dandruff
  • Natural sheen — creates a glossy coating that reflects light beautifully
  • Hormone balance for follicles — diosgenin in fenugreek mimics estrogen, supporting hair growth

The Full Formula

Carrier Oil

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Jamaica — roasted and cold-pressed from castor beans

The original length retention oil of the diaspora

Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) is made by roasting castor beans before cold-pressing, which creates higher ash content and a darker color than regular castor oil. The roasting process increases the ricinoleic acid content and adds unique scalp-nourishing properties not found in regular castor oil.

Key Benefits

  • Length retention — thick, coating texture seals the hair shaft against moisture loss and breakage
  • Scalp nourishment — ricinoleic acid (90% of fatty acid content) deeply penetrates the scalp
  • Hair thickening — promotes growth of thicker, fuller strands over time
  • Reduces breakage — seals split ends and strengthens weak points along the strand
  • Moisture sealing — acts as the perfect sealant in the LOC method
  • Edge growth — widely used to restore edges and baby hairs
Why we use it: JBCO is the backbone of our oil's sealing power. We blend it with lighter carrier oils so you get the full length-retention benefits without the heaviness that pure castor oil creates.
Carrier Oil

Jojoba Oil

Sonoran Desert — USA, Mexico

The only oil that perfectly mimics your scalp's natural sebum

Simmondsia chinensis — technically a liquid wax, not an oil. Jojoba is structurally identical to the sebum naturally produced by your scalp, which means your follicles recognize and absorb it instantly without buildup or heaviness.

Key Benefits

  • Scalp balance — regulates oil production, reducing both dryness and excess grease
  • Non-comedogenic — won't clog follicles or cause scalp breakouts
  • Infinite shelf life — jojoba never goes rancid, making it a natural preservative
  • Lightweight hydration — absorbs in seconds with zero greasy residue
  • Cuticle sealing — closes the hair cuticle for smoothness and shine
  • Scalp soothing — anti-inflammatory properties relieve itching and irritation
Why we use it: Jojoba is the bridge ingredient in our formula — it helps all the other oils absorb faster and more efficiently. Without it, heavier oils like castor sit on top of the hair instead of penetrating.
Carrier Oil

Avocado Oil

Mexico, California, South Africa

One of the only oils that penetrates the cortex of the hair

Cold-pressed from Persea americana fruit, avocado oil is unique among carrier oils for its ability to penetrate the inner cortex of the hair shaft (not just coat the surface) due to its small molecular structure and high oleic acid content.

Key Benefits

  • Deep penetration — reaches the cortex to nourish from the inside out
  • Protein strengthening — rich in amino acids that rebuild hair's keratin structure
  • Extreme moisture — oleic acid binds water molecules within the hair shaft
  • Scalp penetration — reaches the dermis layer to nourish follicles at the root
  • UV protection — natural antioxidants provide mild protection against sun damage
  • Reduces breakage — improves hair elasticity so strands stretch instead of snap
Why we use it: Most oils condition the outside of the hair. Avocado oil conditions the inside. That's why it's a cornerstone of both our oil and our Amla blend in the butter — it's doing work most ingredients can't.
Carrier Oil

Sunflower Oil

North America, Eastern Europe

The lightweight base that lets everything else work

Cold-pressed from Helianthus annuus seeds, high-oleic sunflower oil is one of the lightest, most stable carrier oils available. Its exceptionally high linoleic acid content makes it perfect for all hair types, especially fine or easily weighed-down hair.

Key Benefits

  • Feather-light texture — absorbs instantly without any residue or heaviness
  • Scalp protection — linoleic acid maintains the skin barrier of the scalp
  • Moisture retention — creates a thin protective layer that slows water evaporation
  • Shine without grease — imparts high-gloss shine that looks natural, not oily
  • Vitamin E rich — natural antioxidant protection against environmental damage
  • Universal compatibility — works beautifully on all hair types and textures
Why we use it: Sunflower oil is our base — the canvas everything else is painted on. Its light texture means the heavier, more potent oils (castor, avocado) can be used at effective concentrations without making the formula feel heavy.
Carrier Oil

Grapeseed Oil

France, Italy, Spain — a byproduct of winemaking

The antioxidant-rich strengthener from the vine

Cold-pressed from the seeds of Vitis vinifera grapes, grapeseed oil is extraordinarily high in OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) — antioxidants that are 20× more potent than Vitamin C and 50× more potent than Vitamin E.

Key Benefits

  • Antioxidant powerhouse — OPCs neutralize free radicals that cause hair aging and dullness
  • Strengthens strands — proanthocyanidins reinforce the hair shaft at a molecular level
  • Scalp circulation — increases blood flow to follicles, supporting growth
  • Ultra-lightweight — one of the lightest oils on the comedogenic scale
  • Natural shine — imparts brilliant high-shine finish
  • Locks in moisture — forms a permeable barrier that holds hydration without blocking breathability
Why we use it: Grapeseed is our antioxidant shield. While the botanical infusions are doing active work on growth, grapeseed is quietly protecting every strand from the environmental damage that undoes that work.
Active Ingredient

Vitamin E Oil

Derived from sunflower or wheat germ

The antioxidant that ties every formula together

Tocopherol — the most bioavailable form of Vitamin E. A fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes, extends the shelf life of the formula, and deeply nourishes both scalp and strand.

Key Benefits

  • Free radical protection — neutralizes oxidative stress that makes hair brittle and dull
  • Scalp healing — repairs damage from heat, chemicals, and environmental stress
  • Cuticle restoration — smooths rough, raised cuticles for better moisture retention
  • Formula preservation — natural antioxidant extends the life of all other oils
  • Shine amplifier — fills in micro-cracks in the cuticle for mirror-like reflection
  • Circulation boost — applied to the scalp, improves blood flow to follicles
Why we use it: Vitamin E is both an active ingredient and a preservative. It's doing double duty in every formula — protecting your hair and protecting the integrity of all the other ingredients.
Botanical Butter

Shea Butter

West Africa — the Shea Belt (Ghana, Mali, Nigeria)

Africa's gift to natural hair — the ultimate moisture sealant

Butyrospermum parkii — raw, unrefined shea butter is extracted from the nut of the African shea tree. Unrefined shea retains all its natural vitamins, fatty acids, and healing compounds that refining destroys. It has been used by women across West Africa for centuries for both hair and skin.

Key Benefits

  • Deep moisture sealing — stearic and oleic fatty acids create an impenetrable moisture barrier
  • Curl definition — seals and shapes coils without crunch or stiffness
  • Split end repair — penetrates and fills split ends to temporarily seal breakage
  • UV protection — natural SPF 6 provides mild sun protection for hair and scalp
  • Anti-inflammatory scalp healing — triterpenoids reduce scalp irritation, eczema, and psoriasis
  • Softness without heaviness — melts at body temperature for silky, non-greasy application
Why we use it: Shea is the foundation of our butter formula. We use raw, unrefined, Grade A shea — not the white, odorless refined version that's stripped of its benefits. You'll notice the natural ivory color and subtle nutty scent.
Botanical Butter

Mango Butter

India, West Africa — pressed from mango seed kernels

Lightweight luxury that won't weigh your curls down

Mangifera indica seed butter is extracted from the inner kernel of the mango seed — not the fruit itself. It has a lighter, silkier texture than shea butter with a higher stearic acid content, making it perfect for curl definition without heaviness.

Key Benefits

  • Lightweight moisture — provides deep hydration without the weight of shea alone
  • Curl elongation — helps stretch and define coils without shrinkage
  • Frizz elimination — seals the cuticle flat against humidity
  • Scalp healing — rich in oleic acid, which deeply penetrates and repairs dry scalp
  • Non-comedogenic — won't clog pores or cause breakouts on hairline and scalp
  • Fast absorption — melts on contact with skin or hair for instant conditioning
Why we use it: Mango butter balances our shea. Where shea is rich and sealing, mango is silky and light. Together they create a texture that's rich enough to seal moisture but light enough for type 3–4 hair to stay defined, not weighed down.
Carrier Oil

Coconut Oil

Southeast Asia, Pacific Islands, South India

The only oil proven to reduce protein loss inside the hair shaft

Cocos nucifera — virgin cold-pressed coconut oil is composed almost entirely of medium-chain fatty acids (primarily lauric acid) with a unique linear molecular structure that allows it to penetrate the hair cortex, something most oils cannot do.

Key Benefits

  • Protein loss prevention — the only oil clinically proven to reduce protein loss from washing
  • Pre-wash protection — used before shampooing, dramatically reduces hygral fatigue
  • Deep conditioning — lauric acid penetrates to the cortex for inside-out conditioning
  • Antimicrobial scalp protection — lauric acid destroys scalp bacteria and fungi
  • Shine amplification — leaves an unmatched high-gloss finish
  • Heat protection — forms a protective layer that buffers against thermal damage
Why we use it: Every wash strips a little protein from your hair. Coconut oil is the only ingredient that actively prevents that. In our butter, it works with shea and mango to ensure moisture stays locked in between wash days.
Carrier Oil

TBG Amla Oil (Avocado + Amla Powder)

India — the Indian Gooseberry, sacred in Ayurveda

Our signature ingredient — a 5,000-year-old growth secret

This is our proprietary blend: avocado oil infused with amla powder (Phyllanthus emblica — Indian gooseberry). Amla is one of the highest natural sources of Vitamin C on earth and has been the cornerstone of Ayurvedic hair care for 5,000 years. We infuse the powder into avocado oil to create a potent, deeply penetrating growth treatment.

Key Benefits

  • Exceptional Vitamin C content — one amla berry contains 20× the Vitamin C of an orange
  • DHT inhibition — blocks the hormone responsible for follicle miniaturization and hair loss
  • Melanin preservation — slows premature graying by protecting pigment-producing cells
  • Scalp strengthening — tannins in amla strengthen hair roots and reduce shedding
  • Protein synthesis boost — Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, which strengthens hair
  • Deep penetration — the avocado oil base carries amla's nutrients deep into the cortex
Why we use it: TBG Amla Oil is our signature — you won't find it in any other formula. We created it by infusing amla powder directly into avocado oil so the benefits of both ingredients amplify each other. It's the ingredient that makes the butter truly different.
Humectant

Aloe Vera Gel

North Africa — now grown globally

Nature's hydrating healer for scalp and strand

Aloe barbadensis miller gel is extracted from the inner leaf of the aloe plant and is 99% water — but a very special kind of water loaded with enzymes, vitamins B, C, E, folic acid, and natural enzymes that directly benefit the scalp and hair.

Key Benefits

  • Deep hydration — aloe's molecular structure allows it to penetrate the hair shaft with water
  • Scalp pH balancing — restores the scalp's natural 4.5–5.5 pH, reducing breakage
  • Dandruff reduction — proteolytic enzymes dissolve dead skin cells on the scalp
  • Frizz control — seals the cuticle with hydration rather than silicones
  • Lightweight moisture — provides hydration without any weight or residue
  • Promotes growth — enzymes stimulate dormant follicles and improve scalp health
Why we use it: Aloe is our water-phase hero. In a butter formula, the water phase is critical — it's what keeps the product feeling light and moisturizing rather than just oily. Aloe replaces plain water with something that actively benefits your hair.
Humectant

Glycerin

Vegetable-derived — a byproduct of saponification

The humectant that draws moisture from the air into your hair

Glycerol — a naturally occurring compound derived from plant oils through saponification. It is one of the most effective humectants in cosmetics, with a hygroscopic (moisture-attracting) capacity that is unmatched by synthetic alternatives.

Key Benefits

  • Atmospheric moisture drawing — pulls water molecules from the air directly into the hair shaft
  • Long-lasting hydration — keeps moisture levels elevated for 24+ hours
  • Curl definition enhancement — plumps the hair shaft for more defined, bouncy coils
  • Frizz prevention — fully hydrated hair doesn't seek moisture from humidity
  • Scalp conditioning — soothes dryness and flakiness at the root
  • Shine amplifier — hydrated, plump hair strands reflect light better
Why we use it: Glycerin ensures our butter keeps working long after you apply it. While shea and mango seal in what's already there, glycerin is actively pulling new moisture into your hair all day long.
Active Ingredient

Vitamin C

Derived from L-ascorbic acid or ascorbyl glucoside

The brightening, collagen-building powerhouse for your skin

Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin and potent antioxidant that plays an essential role in collagen biosynthesis, skin brightening, and protection against UV-induced oxidative damage. In skincare, it is one of the most well-researched active ingredients in existence.

Key Benefits

  • Skin brightening — inhibits melanin production to fade dark spots and even skin tone
  • Collagen synthesis — essential cofactor for collagen production, improving firmness and elasticity
  • Antioxidant protection — neutralizes free radicals from UV exposure and pollution
  • Hyperpigmentation reduction — fades post-inflammatory marks and discoloration
  • Wound healing support — accelerates skin repair and reduces scarring
  • Glow enhancement — increases luminosity by accelerating cell turnover
Why we use it: We added Vitamin C to the skin conditioner specifically to address hyperpigmentation — a top skin concern in our community. Combined with shea butter's barrier protection, it brightens while it nourishes.
Cold-Infused Botanical

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Southeast Asia — India, Sri Lanka, Thailand

The purifying botanical that keeps your scalp in balance

Cymbopogon citratus — lemongrass essential oil is steam-distilled from the fresh or dried leaves of lemongrass. Its primary active compound, citral, is a powerful antifungal and antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be as effective as pharmaceutical antifungals against Candida species.

Key Benefits

  • Scalp purification — citral eliminates the fungus responsible for dandruff at the source
  • Sebum regulation — reduces excessive oil production without stripping natural moisture
  • Follicle strengthening — tightens and tones the scalp tissue around each follicle
  • Natural fragrance — provides the signature fresh, citrusy scent of the butter
  • Antioxidant protection — protects the scalp from environmental damage
  • Circulation boost — warming effect increases blood flow to the scalp
Why we use it: Lemongrass is the scent story of our butter — but it's earning its place on more than fragrance alone. Its clinical antifungal strength means it's actively supporting scalp health with every application.
